Adam Plachetka as Alfion in Margaret Open Air stage in Hungary

One of the highlights of the 2026 season at Budapest’s Margaret Island Theatre will be a new production of Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana paired with Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, presented on 25 and 27 June on the spectacular open-air stage. Renowned for attracting internationally acclaimed artists and large-scale productions, the festival has established itself as one of Central Europe’s most distinctive summer cultural destinations, welcoming nearly 100,000 visitors each season.

A special attraction of this year’s opera premiere will be the appearance of Czech bass-baritone Adam Plachetka, who will perform the role of Alfio in both performances of Cavalleria Rusticana. Plachetka has already earned critical acclaim for his portrayal of the proud Sicilian carter at the Vienna State Opera, where his commanding stage presence and vocal authority made the role one of the notable successes of his Italian repertoire.
